The State of Religious Intolerance In Nigeria

The recent case of Deborah Samuel, who was gruesomely murdered, can be described as the height of disregard to the laws of a country. This is more so as the laws in Nigeria (like in other countries) frown at taking the life of another person unlawfully. In the case of Deborah, a Christian female student was beaten to death by fellow students who are Islamic scholars in Nigeria following an accusation of blasphemy at a university. According to the media sources, a group of aggressive Muslim students called her a ‘blasphemer’ for some remarks she made to the Muslim community. The murderers of Deborah could be heard yelling “Allahu Akbar” and showing off the matchbox they used to burn her bruised body, and delighting in the horrible crime in videos that have gone viral.

According to reports, the lady and her classmates were using a Whatsapp platform to communicate with one another, and inside that group, someone had uploaded an Islamic article. The lady had reacted to the Islamic post with a remark to the effect that the colleagues should stop posting irrelevant posts to the group which is specifically meant for sharing information relating to the class. The said reaction was perceived by some Muslim students as blasphemous. This led to the woman being accused of committing blasphemy. Thereafter, a violent mob attack was carried out on the lady as the university authorities, and the police watched helplessly.

According to reports, the crowd was so large that the rescue efforts for the lady were unsuccessful. The group of male Muslim students of the institution beat the lady viciously, stoned her to death, and set fire on her corpse. As a direct response to the occurrence, the university authorities have decided to close the campus indefinitely till further notice. On the other hand, the police have been said to have apprehended two suspects, but most criminals are at large.

I am disappointed to hear that religion is not a problem in Nigeria. Unfortunately it is one of the major problems that we have in Nigeria. How many citizens of Nigeria that some ignorant Muslims have killed, not to mention the numbers of persons that must have been killed across Nigeria as a nation! Pastors on their part are saying that only prayer can save Nigerians? I believe strongly that these pastors have been praying since they were young for Nigeria to be a better country, instead of that the country is getting worse day by day. Meanwhile, some other countries that can be perceived to be less religious and pray less are doing better and improving in all facets of the economy. Some of our religious leaders do not know the reason why the religion was created and presented to the world. It is met to reduce and possibly eliminate:

i.        Killing human being;

ii.       Violent;

iii.      Physical abuse and mentally abuse.

Once you have the fear of God there are some things you will not get yourself involved with, and having the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. One thing Africans fail to understand is that those countries that brought religions to Africa, have their own agenda. After they saw what Africans had as resources, the question was: how can we penetrate Africa’s resources? Hence, the strategy was that we will introduce our Almighty God to them and brainwash their great-grandfather to throw their own gods away. However some of those gods were stolen and they were found in their own museum today. Over decades, they successfully took Nigeria’s resources, used it to beautify their country and they continue looping and turning Nigeria to a business enterprise.

To the Christian and Islamic leaders, my questions for you today are: what are you teaching the new generation? You are hiding in your palace promoting violence in your mother and father land. You are silent because you don’t want to lose your contract connections from other religions leaders. Have it in mind you will give account to your silence before you leave this life and on judgment day, you will give account in heaven before Almighty God.

Terrible things are happening in the country every day, and all our political leaders go silent.  That shows the level of Incompetence and insensitivity. The leaders are busy playing politics with everything happening in the country. The leaders are scared of losing political allies. Also, the country does not have a good constitution or Law that will protects the citizens. The citizens abide by the law of the state that is handicap in protecting them. In Nigeria, government officials get away with numbers of crimes daily. Officials award contracts to themselves and collect the funds from the government and abandon the project. EFCC would not go and look for them, but if it is an individual young man that commits fraudulent activity, they will show him on national TV as a criminal.  What about the government officials that are stealing the country’s funds. Is high time EFCC started using the government officials as scapegoats. That will send the message across to the nation that nobody is above the law of the state.

Our current president in his first term was in his 70s. He made some decisions that made the citizens of the country believe in him and voted for him for a second term. He ordered the execution of people that were dealing with drugs in the country. Commit a crime in Nigeria, as long as you are from the northern part of Nigeria, they will set you free. A glaring example to fortify this point is the case of Deborah Samuel’s case mentioned herein.

The Northern part of Nigeria makes everyone believe strongly that whenever they are in power, they are always sharing blood. As a matter of fact, they have turned the country to killing ground and terrorist country.

I have mentioned this in my previous article, the constitution that they are operating in Nigeria at the moment were designed by a couple of government officials on behalf of the nation and they impose it on the nation.

I called it fraudulent 1999 Constitution that allows for stealing, voting power, slavery of its own citizens. The Constitution does not promote equal rights within citizens.

Instead of the Nigeria leaders investing in valuable resources such as education, welfare centres, Health Centre, for future leaders to have sound education,  they are busy siphoning public funds, with absolute disregard for the timid youth. The education sector in the country is currently on the standstill, stakeholders in the educational sector are busy pursuing their political ambitions. It has become a normal routine for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the country to go on strike every now and then as they are currently on strike. It is expected in the light of the fact that the leaders’ children are busy studying abroad. On the issue of health care, the leaders have failed to fix the hospitals in the country, and run to the United States of America (USA), United Kingdom (UK) and other countries for any slight medical issue. Meanwhile, the doctors responsible for their treatment abroad are Nigerians who could not find requisite facilities needed for effectively practice medicine in Nigeria. They are busy purchasing presidential forms for as much as N100,000,000.00 (one hundred million naira). One will be forced to ask how these leaders got the money, if the funds were not stolen.

When you do not have the above system in place, you have already failed as leaders. Every valuable resource running as a private business and low class citizen cannot afford to pay their children’s school fee or a medical bill. The fact remains that when children grow up without education, they will become liability to the system. Ask yourself a question:  “As a leader what have you done for the masses?”
