Poor Decisions and unfair play by local referee

Football is a game of diligence, hard work, and team spirit. A referee’s job is to ensure that the sport is played in good spirits and players abide by the rules at all times. Foul play is looked down upon, especially when a referee engages in one.

Recently, I have seen several referees playing favorites and deviating from their responsibilities. A referee’s behavior is important as it serves as an example to football players, especially young ones. In my previous and resents experience as a coach and manager, I have noticed several referees taking poor decisions and supporting unfair play. Once a team has six to seven black minority players, some referees will do everything in their power to make sure they don’t win the game.

The team suffered because the referee was unprofessional and took decisions that were unfair. When the black minority won the free-kick, the referee refused the free-kick and told them to play on. As a result, sometimes it feels like the team is playing AGAINST the referee. How long will this continue? Another instance is when black minority players are called out for poor tackle, but when the opposing team does the same, the referee turns a blind eye and gives them a free pass. The issue is not even addressed, let alone punished for.

Furthermore, the offside rules are always in favor of the opposite team. It is as if the rules are enforced only when players with a minority background are a part of the game. This is not a new incident; it has been going around for a very long time and several young players have been seriously impacted. Nobody is willing to speak up, which further encourages these referees to play dirty. I am very sure that many local clubs around the city have also experienced this type of discriminatory behavior. I always emphasize that it is crucial to let children play the game themselves; manoeuvre through the difficulties and use their own judgment. It does not help them grow if you interfere and play the game for them.

I would like to describe my recent experience at the U18 league match. The referee in charge of the game behaved in a rather odd manner. He used separate match cards for the home team. Then we spoke to him and asked the reason for this, he simply said that it was how he functioned. His own rules so to speak, I was taken aback and rather surprised by the conversation. The referee used a pen to cancel the home team side and gave us, the visiting team side to fill. After the match concluded, we decided to investigate the matter.

We conducted thorough research and learned that each team manager has the right to exchange or adjust the list of players and substitutes before kick-off (kick-off signifies the commencement of the game). This takes place when the request is placed by a team at the Junior or Underage Level. However, in our case, we did not come across any such list. We did not get the list of the home teams; that includes the team manager as well. We did not have the details of home teams’ managers’ names or players’ names! Therefore, we came to the conclusion that the match was not official!

We were shocked to find out that the home team consisted of players that were over 18 (under 21) while ours was an under 18 team. The blatant disregard for rules bothered me a lot. There was no way for us to verify as they gave us separate match cards, hence we could not see the names of the players (of the home team).

Referees playing favoritism is not a new concept, however, in recent years it has increased. I strongly urge the Local FA to formally investigate and reprimand the unprofessional referees. It is our duty to maintain the sanctity of the game and ensure that the new generation learns to respect and play the game fairly. It is the handful of referees that are ruining the image of the game. I know several fantastic referees that take excellent decisions and ensure the game is fair. Mistakes are understandable; after all, we are all humans. However, taking unfair decisions and having a bias is very disrespectful.

We sincerely urge the FA to look into the matter as we are very concerned about this situation. If strict actions aren’t taken, we aim to protest and shed light on this matter.
