Handling Sports Pressure Among Youth

 

In my opinion, one of the most mishandled and ignored parts of a young athlete’s growth is handling sports pressure, which is a disservice to their best interests. Athletes’ growth can benefit from some stress. When a young player requires encouragement, here is an example. Positive pressure is when you tell him or her that they can do it, that they should get out there and do it, and then you praise them for their success. This pressure may help a player’s self-confidence grow, and it can even contribute to a player’s development into a better player. Thus, the point of handling sports pressure becomes all the more important.

However, according to my study, there is far too much emphasis on pushing these young athletes to their limits. They may feel disheartened to the point that they no longer desire to engage in sports. Isn’t it a pity that this has happened? Parents, coaches, and communities need to be better educated. We must manage our loved ones in the context of the broader picture. Self-confidence! “My whole objective when it comes to my children is to make sure they feel good about themselves,” an influential person once said regarding their own children. Don’t you think it’s pretty good? This is precisely why we must control the amount of pressure placed on young athletes in sports.

It All Begins Here

To begin, children should be at least six years old before participating in any structured team sport, according to my study. This is determined by psychological, cognitive, and physical growth. You should even have your child assessed individually to determine their preparedness and suitable degree of participation, to begin with.

It is up to us to take responsibility.

I think that as responsible parents, coaches, and communities, we should be supporting these young athletes to pursue their dreams.

  1. Have a good time! Fun! Fun! This cannot be overstated.
  2. We should enable everyone to engage in the game; in other words, everyone should receive a chance to play. (no one on the bench or on the sidelines)
  3. Foster an environment that promotes a good athletic experience by teaching the fundamentals and correct skills required for the sport they are participating in.
  4. As those responsible for the well-being of our loved ones, we must be aware of our own impressions. We need to change our thoughts and actions if we want to keep striving for that win, win, win. We must recognize that if we do not address these concerns, our most precious loved ones will most certainly become completely disengaged from sports.
  5. Instead of putting undue pressure on our young athletes, we should model good attitudes and behaviours, stick to set reasonable targets, and insist on developing suitable processes to ensure better management and injury reduction. We need to set a better example for our children and grandchildren, instilling a well-developed philosophy and lifestyle of good physical fitness that will last a lifetime.
